Peter's BOOK LIST
Here are some great books I've read recently:
Judith Hand's Women, Power and the Biology of Peace, a clear vision about how we might achieve a future without wars! Check out: www.afww.org
(stands for "a future without war").
Ariel Levy's Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture - clarifies the confusion between sexual freedom and women's equality
Daniel Quinn's books, Ishmael , My Ishmael , Beyond Civilization & The Story of B (on Bantam, NY, 1997, and Harmony Books, NY, 1998) use stories to hold our attention while the content informs us and raises important questions about our future.
Christopher Moore's, Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal , is on Perennial Books, 2002. He's zany and fun and like Quinn and Vonnegut, he uses storyline to entertain us while he provides us with another glimpse of our view of the universe. Check out his book Fluke as well.
Grace Llewellyn's The Teen Liberation Handbook: How to Drop out of School and Get a Real Life and Education, available from Lowry House, Genius Tribe, PO Box 1014, Eugene, OR 97440, Gracejanet@aol.com - 541-686-2315 - opens eyes to many of the glaring flaws of our public education system, and is a standard in the home-school/ unschooling community.
Against The Grain: How Agriculture Has Hijacked Civilization, by Richard Manning, North Point Press, - has profound insights about our consumption of processed foods.
A BIG THANKS to CHRIS WRATHER of the Wrather Family Foundation and to MAL JONES and CAROL KOURY of the Jones Family Foundation for their support.
I am a member of Up The River Consortium, a group of human service organizations that believes that destructive human behavior and violence to women threatens the quality and survival of life on earth. We endeavor to explore and raise awareness on the root causes of this behavior and work cooperatively to seek creative solutions. www.uptheriverendeavors.org
I've been helping Amnesty International spread the word about their AI Kids program that builds awareness in school age children about prisoners of conscience around the world. Email me if you'd like a flyer about the Children's Urgent Action letter writing campaign. Kids can write monthly letters to protect the basic human rights of other kids in danger.
Check out my LINKS page for more information on my friends and other wonderful groups. Thanks for working for peace in the world. Bye for now!
Peter
