In this classic for grown-ups, kids songwriter Peter Alsop goes back to his roots and mixes powerful songs from the feminist men’s and women’s movements with elements of Firesign theater zaniness, CBS Radio Mystery Theater drama, and his own engaging style of educating people while they’re not looking!
“Ebenezer’s Make Over” is a delightful hour of the Dickens “Christmas Carol” story blended with 20 new and classic movement songs by Holly Near, Geof Morgan, Charlie Murphy, Fred Small, Alsop himself and many others. As a close-minded college dean, Ebenezer Scrooge refuses to let the college star basketball player “Not-So-Tiny Tim” start a chapter of a national men’s organization on campus. That night Jacob Marley’s ghost comes on the car radio and chastises Scrooge, warning him that three spirits will come to visit him. The first Spirit begins the “make over” by taking Scrooge back to his childhood to see where his sexist, racist attitudes were formed. The second Spirit, a spirit of color, opens Scrooge's eyes to the “sea of privilege” white men swim in. The third spirits guides Scrooge into the future for a glimpse of what the world will look like if men don't change the gender-linked oppression that is ruining our planet.
Ebenezer's Make Over uses music, humor and story to raise issues and create discussion about gender, homophobia, men’s relationship to war, work, our fathers, the women in our lives and each other.
It’s another classic Peter Alsop project, ... with a little help from his friends!
