HOME WHERE THE HEART IS

Home, Home, Home where the heart is

Home, Home, Home where the heart is

This is our home, the place of our birth

This is our refuge, here on the earth

This is our park, where our children play

Our school and our churches where we come to pray

These are our streets, and these are our stores

These are our houses, our windows and doors

These are our families, these are our friends

These are our bathrooms and kitchens and dens

Our dinette sets, tables and chairs and our beds

Our clothes and our rugs and our workshops and sheds

Pianos and telephones, bicycles, cars,

Mobilehomes, lawnmowers, fences and yards

Our microwaves, blenders, our hot tubs and skiis

Tape cassettes, hair dryers, color T.V.s

Shampoos, antacid pills, creams for our faces,

These are our fillings, and these, our shoelaces!

These things belong to us, we proudly say

No one will ever take them away!

Home, Home, Home where the heart is

Where everyday, everyone sings

Home, Home, Home where the heart is

Here, with all of our things!

 COSTUME PARTY

Chorus:  It’s a costume party, and everyone is here!      D-A, D-A-D

It’s a costume party, and everyone is here!                     D-A, D-A-D

You wear a blue dress, you, red sneakers                        A-D

You wear a suit and tie                                                      A-D

You wear flowers, you wear stripes                                  A-D

You put make-up on your eyes!                                        E-A-Asus4-A

Chorus

You wear brown skin, you wear white

Your head is clean and bare

You poked holes through your earlobes

You’ve got a wart, I bet, somewhere!

Or maybe you dye your hair!?

Chorus

We may be blind, or we wear glasses

We st-stutter when we talk

Sometimes our ears just do not hear

Or we use wheels when we walk!

Chorus

Our disguises could win prizes

Each one’s qualified

But the only thing that really matters

Is who we are inside!

Chorus

LAVENDAR'S WILL

I might not have much time to live

So here's a list of everything

I have got to give;

To my mother, Rose Lynn Mann

I leave my whole collection

Of specimens and research

I've got organized outside

Someday my scientific work

Will prove there's a connection

Between "The Beast That Roars"

And why my Daddy died.

If Mom dies too,  then Mr. Brown,

My teacher, has to take it

He's real smart, he taught me well

So he'll know what to do

And Rob, you take my kitten,

But be careful not to break it!

Bye Mom, bye Rob, remember that

I always will love you.

 BUDDIES

As my lifeline runs through my fingers                              C-G-C

And it snags on knots time to time                                     F-C

Just talkin’ to you, helps them slip through                       F-C-Am

A buddy like you’s hard to find.                                          C-G-C-C7

Chorus:  Buddies like you never need to be told                     F-C

What buddies like me need to say                                       F-C

Life has a flare when you’re standing there                        F-C-Am

And it’s hollow when you’re away.                                       C-G-C, G-G7

Remember that night I was ready to die?

We shared your last Cuban cigar

I laid down in the highway, ... but no one drove by,

So you went to borrow a car!

Chorus

I helped you etch all them lines in your face

And you helped me grow these grey hairs

If I make you sore, ... hell!  What’re friends for?!

We’re buddies ‘cause I know you care!

Brdg:  I like you better than corn-on-the-cob                    F-C

More than the air that I breathe                                        F-C

You’re a mug of cold beer,                                                  F

You’re a laugh, you’re a tear,                                             C-Am

Buddy, you’re a god-damned relief!!                                  C-G-C-C7

Chorus:  Buddies like you never need to be told

What buddies like me need to say

Life has a flare, when you’re standing there

And it’s hollow and empty, ... when you’re away.

 NO EXCUSE T'USE BOOZE!

There's no excuse t'use booze

All you get is confused

Booze makes a problem for you, so

There's no excuse t'use booze!

Chorus

Booze is bad for kids

Now we all know that's true

But some folks won't admit

That it's bad for the grown-ups too!

Chorus

One of my good friends

Offered me some beer

But I got "common sense"

So I whispered in her ear

Chorus

M'friend said "You're no fun!"

"When there's booze around, I grab it!"

She got drunk, and she got sick,

If that's fun, well, she can have it!

COVERS ON OUR HEARTS

MrB:

Sometimes I think I got a

Cover on my heart, I'm thinkin'

Way too much about what

Ev'rybody thinks and, what

Ev'rybody does, it's like I

Act like there's no to-morrow,

All the details seem, so im-

Portant to me, that I

Can't even see to-morrow!

She's so nice, and

So polite, and

It's just too hard, to do

Everything right, an' I sure

Wanna do ev-rything right, when she's a-

Round, I'd sure like to, do

Everything

Right.

Whatever happened to,

Telling a woman that you

Think she really looks

Fine?  Or,

Making a date, or

Planning for later, the

Rules get hazy, it's

Making me crazy!

Maybe I'm losing my

Mind!  I'm thinkin',

La-nah Na-nah Naaah, Nah Naaah!

La-nah Na-nah Naaah-naaah, La-nah Na-nah Naaah!

La-nah Na-nah Naaah, Nah Naaah!

We got covers, we got covers on our hearts!

Rose:

Sometimes I feel, there's a

Cover on my heart, I worry

Way too much about how

Ev'rybody feels, and so I

Shut them out, it's like I

Act like there's no to-morrow,

All the feelings I feel, are so

Painful and real, sometimes I

Don't want to see, to-morrow.

He's so nice, and

So polite, and

It's just too hard, to do

Ev'rything right, an' I sure

Wanna do ev'rything right, when he's a-

Round, I'd sure

Like to, do

Ev'rything,

Right.

Whatever happened to,

Taking some time just to,

See what your heart has to say?

Swing on the front porch,

Feel the moonlight,

Drinking some cold lemonade!  And the

Phone won't ring, and the

TV's off, and the

Cars all stop, they're all,

Waiting to see what your

Heart has to

Say.  And mine says,

La-nah Na-nah Naaah, Nah Naaah!

La-nah Na-nah Naaah-naaah, La-nah Na-nah Naaah!

La-nah Na-nah Naaah, Nah Naaah!

We got covers, we got covers on our hearts!

Chorus1:

MrB& Rs:        We got covers on our hearts

MrB:                   Like the casing on a clock

Rose:                  Like the bandage on a scar

MrB & Rs:       We got covers on our hearts

MrB:                   From moving too fast,

Rose:                  Afraid to be last,

MrB & Rs:       We got covers,

We got covers on our hearts!

Arnold:                Sometimes the men today, they

                            Seem so "sensitive!"  They're

                            Worse than women!

Tom:                   Yeah! They

                            Hug each other!

Arnold:                           Jeez! I'd

                            Rather be dead!

Down in the ground with John

                            Wayne!

Tom:                   He never

                            Hugged no guys!

Arnold:                           Or worried

When he died! I bet he

                            Never cried about to-morrow!

Mrs Fst:            You're so nice.

Mrs Raynr:      You're

                            So polite.

Estelle:               And it's just too hard, to do

                            Everything right,

Women:            An' we wanna

                            Make ev'rything perfect all the

                            Time, we'd sure

                            Like to, make

                            Ev'rything,

                            Right.

B & Lty:           Whatever happened to,

                            Trusting your feelings?

Dr. H:                 You don't feel so safe when you're

                            Burned.

Letty:                 Now

                            Nothin's okay,

Bill:                     "Don't you

                            Worry!" they say,

Letty:                 Well, I got lots of fears, and I

                            Ain't prayed in years,

B & Lty:           But we don't know where else we can

                            Turn!!  We got,

B & Lty:           We got covers on our hearts

Bill:                    Like the casing on a clock

Lty:                    Like the bandage on a scar

B & Lty:          We got covers on our hearts

Bill:                   From losing our trust,

Lty:                   It's hard to adjust!

Bill & Lty:       We got covers,

We got covers on our hearts!

DrFst:                 Sometimes I wonder why I

                            Even bother to give

                            Jobs to people who don't

                            Understand, why

                            Our Great Land needs this

                            Power that my plant pro-vides!

                                          Sure, we all

                            Make mistakes, let's hope that

Nothing else breaks, it's a risk

                            We must take for to-morrow!

Town:                 We're all so nice, and

                            So polite, and

We try so hard, to do

                            Ev'rything right, an' we sure

                            Wanna do ev'rything

                            Right in our hometown,

                                          we'd sure

                            Like to, do

                            Everything,

                            Right.

Penny:                            Whatever happened to,

                            People with courage who

Fight when they know they've been

                            Screwed!  Have you

                            Sold your passion for

                            Next season's fashions?!  While

                            We're being poisened and

                            Lied to and bombed, you're

                            Worried about being

                            Rude!!

Chorus 1

(Town)

Mr. B:                 If only just once,  ahhh,

                            We could break free,

Pie:                     Throw off the covers,

Rose:                  Then we would see, we don't

                            Have to be scared!

Pie:                     If our

                            Hearts could discover,

                            How, to reach

                            Out to each other, then

Kids:                   We could change the world!

Pie:                     Can you

                            Do it?!

Kids:                   We can

                            Change the world!

Pie:                     Not if you

                            Hide!

Kids:                   We can

                            Change the world!

Pie:                     See how you

                            Feel now!

Kids:                   We can

                            Change the world!

Pie:                     Give it a

                            Try!    You can,

Kids:                   Change it!  Change it!

Pie:                     Yes!  You can

                            Do it!

Kids:                   We can change it!

Pie:                     You can,

Kids:                   Change it!  Change it!

Pie:                     Ahhhh!  It's up to

                            You!

Kids:                   We can change it!

Pie:                     You can

                            Do it!

Kids:                   We can change it!

Pie:                     You can

                            Do it!

Kids:                   We can change it!

Pie:                     You can

                            Do it!

Kids:                   We can change it!

Pie:                     You can

                            Do it!

Kids:                   We can change it!  We can

Change it! Change it! Change it!  We can

                            Change the world!  We can

Change it! Change it! Change it!  We can

                            Change the world!

Pie:                     Let's all go

Ensmbl:              La-nah Na-nah Naaah, Nah Naaah!

Kids:                   We can change it!  Change it!

Town:                 We got covers on our hearts

Ensmbl:             La-nah Na-nah Naaah-naaah, La-nah Na-nah Naaah!

Town:                 Like the casing on a clock

Kids:                   We can change the world!

Ensmbl:             La-nah Na-nah Naaah, Nah Naaah!

Town:                 Like the bandage on a scar

Kids:                   We can change it!  Change it!

Town:                 We got covers,

We got covers on our hearts!

We got covers, on our hearts!

Kids:                   We can change the world!!!

THE GUITAR

Once I had a fine guitar

She taught me to play

Her rosewood fingerboard

Had little birds of pearl inlay

Her simple voice was clear

It had the ring of youth

She had heartwood deep inside

So she always sang the truth

The days that I spent holding her

Were full of life for me

She saw people clearly

And she sang what she would see.

Insecurities of lovers

Trying hard to hold their pose

The clash of children's colors

When they pick out their own clothes

The heart beats lost forever

Inside those afraid to touch

And the reasons people give

Explaining why they own too much

When she sang with honest beauty

Of the love we might achieve

Then the people flocked to hear her

Yes, they wanted to believe

But when she sang about our problems

They would say that she was wrong

They told her she was crazy

They said "Sing the pretty songs!

Sing the pretty songs!”

But she didn't stop her songs

The people had to know

She only sang them louder

’Cause she loved the people so

When the comforts of the wealthy

Are worth more than healthy kids

When our trusted leaders lie

And give us broken promises

When the lives of all the creatures

On the earth are on the line

Then it's time for better answers!

Now we'd better find some time!"

But the people wouldn't listen

Even though she screamed and cried

And the strain from all her trying

Cracked her heartwood deep inside

Her strings flew loose and wild

And so everyone assumed

She was just an instrument

Too finely tuned.

Too finely tuned.

Too finely tuned

For an audience of backs

Too finely tuned

With her heartwood full of cracks

Too finely tuned

To close her mouth and shut her eyes

Too finely tuned

To sing them lies.

Once I had a fine guitar

She taught me to play

Her rosewood fingerboard

Had little birds of pearl inlay

Her simple voice was clear

It had the ring of youth

She had heartwood deep inside

So she always sang the truth

And the days that I spend holding her

Are full of life for me

She sees people clearly

And we need that desperately,

She sees people clearly

And we need that desperately!

LETTER TO MR. BROWN

Dear Mr. Brown, (from the kids in your school)

We're writing you a letter like you taught us to do.

We all got together at lunch this noon,

N' decided we'd better do something soon.

'Cause lately you've been diff'rent and we don't know why.

Did we do something wrong?  We're sorry and we'll try

To act a little better, if we've been bad.

We all think that you're the best teacher we've had.

You used to hold our hands when we walked across the street.

You used to help us wash them just before we went to eat.

You used to kneel down and help Robbie tie his shoes,

And sometimes you would thumb-wrestle, usually you'd lose!

You used to boost up Ray and Alice on the monkey bars.

You used to put your arm around us when we got our stars.

Whenever we played "tag", you were "it" the most,

N' you'd even help Tyrone when he'd forget to blow his nose!

You used to help us button up our coats when it was chilly.

You used to mess our hairs up with your hand when we were silly.

N' you used to hug us sometimes, when we fell and hurt our knees,

But you never touch us anymore, . . . so Mr. Brown, please,

Tell us why you're mad at us, and honest, we will change!

You still help us learn to read and add, but now you're acting strange.

You never made us nervous or kept us after school.

You never touched us anywhere that was against the rules,

So, Mr. Brown, please, tell us what we did,

And we hope you read our letter, 'cause it's signed by ev'ry kid.

Signed:

Robie, Susan, Rosie, Lee,

 Lavendar, and Russell T.,

 Matt and Alice, Candy, Ray,

 Mordecai, and Russell A.,

 Ellen, Jennifer, and Mary,

 Jim, Felicia, and Gary,

 Jose', Reggie, Barbie, Joan,

 Harold, and your friend, Tyrone.

DRAW THE LINE

Papers on the floor

Crayons circled 'round her

My daughter shapes

An intricate design

And she orders me to sit

Handling me the blue one

She says "Help me Mommy,

Help me draw the line!"

Chorus:Draw the line, draw the line

We have to help each other draw the line

Draw the line, draw the line

We have to help each other draw the line!

The news is on T.V.

He's asleep upon my lap

Tears jump down my cheeks

Like counting sheep, like counting crimes

And the worst crime of them all

Will be tomorrow morning

We'll get up and go to work

Just like everything is fine!

We'll ignore atomic waste, maybe it will go away

And the chemicals we eat don't taste so bad

Our bombs will keep us safe, and our air smells really great

And the old folks in those homes have no reason to be sad!

Chorus

My kids could save the whales

If there's any left to save

They wonder why the jails

Are overflowing with the poor

They see ninety-nine percent

Of our Senators are men

And that ego, greed, and money

Are the causes of our wars!

The moon shines like his face, I can't look her in the eye

The owl screams "Whooooo - leaves this legacy behind!??"

Somehow we've got to stop, and start a better world

Oh, help me children, please, help me draw the line!

Chorus

And the worst crime of them all,

Will be tomorrow morning

We'll get up and go to work

Just like everything is fine!

ROBBIE AND THE DRAGON

Every evening, just at bedtime

Robbie puts his armor on

Jumps up on his great white stallion

Grabs his sword and then he's gone.

Riding faster than the wind

He races thru the countryside

Moonlight streaming down on him

He's off to fight the Dragon that's been

Burning him inside.

Soon he sees the giant body

Of a little boy asleep

He rides up to the giant ear

And listens to the giant breathe

He knows the giant's really him

And he must go inside, it seems

He's bigger than a mountain range

And Robbie knows the Dragon's waiting

In the Land of Dreams

Then Robbie yells his battle cry!

Hah-Ba-Rheee!  Hallooo-ah-lay!

The stallion rears and charges in

And Robbie knows they're both afraid.

Through the twisting, turning tunnels

Hoof beats pound the passageways

Along the bloody, steaming rivers

Within the giant's neck, brave Robbie

Gallops through the maze.

Through the viney sinew forest

Under tendon trees and bone

They can feel the Dragon roaring

Soon they'll reach the Dragon's home

Then through the smoke of burning flesh

The Dragon's laugher cuts the air

He throws his hot and stinking breath

The stallion trips, brave Robbie falls

Into the Dragon's lair!

Then Robbie sees the Dragon's eye

He sees the hint of fear within

Could it be?!  Hah-Rruuu!  Hah-Rraii!

The Dragon is afraid of him!!?

The power runs through Robbie's arms

He feels the rainbow light inside

He draws his mighty healing sword

And strikes the fire-breathing monster

Right between the eyes!

The Dragon knows his days are numbered

His fire's gone, he turns to run

He's growing smaller, growing weaker

And Robbie knows the time has come

He raises up his healing sword

He's stronger than the Foul Disease!

The Dragon screams and disappears

And now, the giant body of this boy

Can heal in peace.

He whistles for his stallion, who

Comes running to his Master's side

And Robbie leaps up on his back

And off again for home they ride

Off again for home they ride.

Every evening, just at bedtime

Robbie puts his armor on

Jumps up on his great white stallion

Grabs his sword and then he's gone.

UNDER THE RAINBOW

Under the rainbow

Everyone cares

Everyone shares

We've got to go!

Under the rainbow

It can come true,

If you believe

It's up to you!

I want my chance to grow up strong

To love my friends, and live my life

Without being scared that something's wrong

To take my turn and make mistakes

To learn as much, or more than you

To fall in love and cry when my heart breaks

You cannot give the world to us

It is not yours to give

It is a home for every child

Who needs to grow and live

And for awhile, we may borrow

The air and trees and sun

But we must never, never break the trust

Of the children yet to come

A PORSCHE AND A POTBELLY

Chorus

I got a Porsche and a potbelly

It's the great American dream

I got a Porsche and a potbelly

And someone t'keep 'em both clean!

Now I ain't lookin'

For times t'get lean

I'm kinda fonda my mid-rift bulge

And I love my machine!

You all laughed at me back when

My car was old and funny

Now y'gotta take me serious, yeah,

'Cause I got lotsa money!

I've been crankin' out a bank account

Instead of squeakin' by

Let's eat and drink and PAAARRR-TY!!

Let's party 'til we die!!  Whoooo!

C'mere Babe, I'm a real man

'Cause I can pay your way

And you know I love you Honey,

Long as you do what I say!

Now m'job ain't great, but who's complainin'?

Uh-uh, Man, not me!  I got the

Goose with the golden eggs by the neck,

The "yolk's" on you, not me!!!

Chorus

I got a Porsche and a potbelly

And lotsa gasoline

And I don't eat "lean cuisine!"

(Spoken:  Hey, you got a cigarette?  Thanks!

Got a light?   Alll-riiight!  )
